Boba Fett: Red Dawn

The idea of creating a Boba Fett movie has been with Jason since he was a little boy, which is along time! Now we know there are plans to make a spin-off Boba Fett Movie now that Disney have their hands on it, which is great! But in the mean time we couldn’t wait and wanted to create a fun little parody showing Boba Fett escaping the Sarlacc pit and leaving Tatooine .

So some concepts were created, and wheels put in motion. We wanted to focus on making it look pretty rather than do anything to clever with the story, and we’re really pleased with how it turned out.

The storyboarding process, is usually one of the first things we do, it helps us focus the mind and get those ideas rattling around in our heads onto paper. We use Toon Boom Storyboard pro for all our storyboarding as the speed in which you can work is fantastic. It also allows us to change and mix things up quickly which can happen a lot at this early stage of production.

We don’t always produce an animatic, especially when it’s our own internal project as we tend to have pretty clear ideas about how we want to approach things. That said for this Boba Fett Parody we did produce this little animatic. The main reason was to get a feel for the music we would want to accompany it. We had planned on using this piece used in the Animatic, but eventually decided upon commissioning a specific track created by Greg Hulme.

An important part of the animation process is the final post production where we give everything a final check. During this stage we would often make changes to colour saturation and add lighting effects and other special effects where needed. This stage defines how the final rendered video will look, and a good example of this you can see in the two sample scenes below where you can see the differences between the original animation and final rendered version.

As this was a project we worked on around other things it is hard to say exactly how long we spent on it, needless to say it was well in excess of 100 hours work. We used a total of 5 different applications, from photoshop, Toon Boom Harmony, Apple Motion and  Adobe After Effects with the final video editing done in Final Cut. The music was written and created by the very talented Greg Hulme and really helps to create the right atmosphere.
